UpCycled Bicycle Arch
January 13, 2012 (andy)

Vancouver is a cycling city. While the rest of the country battles extremes in weather and temperature, we suit up in our favourite gear and slay the North Shore single track, blast through rush hour on our commuter trips, enjoy leisurely latte-fuelled cruiser rides, drop the hammer on the road, and much more. To celebrate such an iconic activity in an iconic city, we created the 'UpCycled' Bicycle Wedding Arch.

Fabricated from raw steel and dozens of re-purposed bicycle chain rings, it is a beautiful representation of feminine and masculine perfection (in our minds).

Available to celebrate your special day.

Growing Flowers for your Wedding
January 19, 2011 (corn)

Have you thought about growing flowers for your wedding? With a little planning it is fairly easy and enjoyable. Growing your own flowers is also an environmentally friendly option that is light on your budget and can be a great way to involve family and friends in your wedding plans.

Know what you're getting into:
It's important to do a bit of research into what flowers will be in bloom during your wedding. It is also a good idea to plan bouquets of more than one flower type; this adds complexity and interest to your design and you are also covered if some of your desired flowers are not in bloom at the right time. If you have a very specific vision of your wedding flowers, then growing your own may not be for you. It is also difficult (although not impossible) to grow reliable flowers for a winter wedding.

Getting help:
Perhaps you already know someone with a beautiful flower garden. Most gardeners are honoured to provide flowers for weddings, so go ahead and ask. You can ask a friend or relative to arrange your flowers, but be aware that this can be a big undertaking that takes place very close to your wedding. You can also ask your decorator or florist if they will work with homegrown flowers. (reFresh Events is always willing and happy to work with homegrown flowers).

Planning your flowers:
Clicking the following link will open a photo gallery that provides an overview of popular wedding flowers and their blooming seasons - http://bit.ly/liDhc0

This information can also be helpful if you plan on ordering flowers through your favourite florist. Ordering in-season flowers ensures that your bouquets are at their peak, and they generally have a smaller environmental footprint as well (because they can be grown locally).

Don't limit yourself to this list though. There are hundreds of flowers to choose from at your local florist or garden store. Check blooming and growing times, make sure the flower has a good stem length and isn't too fragile. You can grow from seed, bulbs, or from potted plants. You will get better results if you have a raised plot with good soil, sun, and irrigation. Follow directions on seed packs or pots for planting time, spacing and, location (full sun or shade).

Harvesting:
Cut your flowers as close to your wedding as possible and store in water in a cool dark place. If flowers are going on a table, make sure to inspect for insects. If flowers are to be carried in a bouquet, shake or cut out pollen stamens that can stain clothes. (Especially watch out for the pollen stamens on Lilies).

Melissa + Corey
August 17, 2010 (andy)

The Fraserview Community Hall provided a very clean, blank template in which to create a wonderful reception space for Melissa & Corey. These were the hot days of summer, so a cool & refreshing, yet classy atmosphere was the choice.

Traditional white with a fuchsia pink and chocolate brown colour injection created a modern look with great accents and pop.

"Corey and I want to thank you both for such an amazing job. The decor was stunning! We could never have done that without you, so thank you both!" - Melissa
